Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that took 26 lives on 22 April 2025, a video has gone viral on social media (here and here) showing clashes between police and civilians. The post is being shared with claims that protests have erupted in India, demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation in the aftermath of the attack. Let’s verify the claim made in the post through this article.
Claim: The video shows a clash between police and civilians who were protesting and demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation following the recent 2025 Pahalgam terror attack.
Fact: The viral video has been online since at least January 2020 and is not related to the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions following the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.
A reverse image search of the key frames from the viral video led us to a video uploaded by a Facebook page called Lie Lama on 10 January 2020, featuring the same visuals. According to the post, the clash was between students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, and the police. This confirms that the video is not related to the recent India-Pakistan tensions following the Pahalgam attack.
We used relevant keywords and found multiple reports from January 2020 about a clash between students and the police at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) (here, here, and here). According to these reports, on 5 January 2020, violence broke out at JNU in Delhi when a group of masked individuals, allegedly including members of the ABVP, attacked students and faculty with sticks and rods. The attack, which lasted for nearly two hours, left several students and teachers injured. The Delhi Police, who were called to the scene, faced heavy criticism for their delayed response and failure to intervene effectively, sparking widespread outrage. Many pointed out that while the police were quick to act during protests outside the campus, they were less involved in dealing with the violence inside JNU.
However, we could not independently verify the exact date or location of the video. But based on the available evidence, it is clear that the video predates the 2025 Pahalgam attack and has no connection to the post-attack tensions between India and Pakistan.
To sum up, an old and unrelated video is falsely shared as a clash between police and protesters demanding PM Modi’s resignation after the Pahalgam terror attack.
