Claim:  A video shows a severely injured and bleeding Hindu woman writhing in pain after an attack in Bangladesh.

Fact: The viral video is from Joynagar, West Bengal, not Bangladesh. The incident occurred on 21 January 2025, when a local e-rickshaw driver found the injured woman lying on a brick pathway near the paddy fields in Anandapur Rathtala, Bakultala. The woman was still alive when found but died on the way to the village hospital. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakultala police station confirmed the details, stating that Latifa Khatun was beaten due to domestic issues, and the accused, Giyasuddin Gazi, has been arrested. There is no communal angle to the incident as both the victim & the accused are Muslims. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

Upon reviewing the viral video, we noticed that the woman can be heard speaking in Bangla, mentioning that she is from Murshidabad. Taking this as a clue, we conducted a Bangla keyword search on Google and found a news report on the YouTube channel of Vision 18 Bangla. The report, dated 24 January 2025, features the same viral incident and is titled ‘Joynagar News: Bloody body of an unidentified woman found in a paddy field in Bakultala, police investigating’.

To learn more about the incident, we conducted a keyword search and found multiple news reports on the incident (here, and here,) (archived here, and here). As per these reports, a local e-rickshaw driver spotted the injured woman lying on a brick pathway near the paddy fields in the Anandapur Rathtala area under Bakultala on 21 January 2025. The reports further mentioned that she was still alive when locals found her but passed away while being transported to the village hospital.

Further investigation revealed additional media reports (here, and here) (archived here and here) on the same incident, identifying the victim as Latifa Khatun, a resident of Murshidabad, and the accused as Giyasuddin Gazi. Gazi was arrested for killing Khatun in an act of revenge. In his confession, Gazi admitted to inviting Khatun to his home in Manirtat, Bakultala, with the intent to kill her. He was later apprehended by the police in the Kultali police station area and presented before the Baruipur sub-divisional court on 28 January 2025.

We then contacted the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakultala police station, who confirmed the details of the case. The official stated, “The incident occurred in Bakultala. The victim, Latifa Khatun, was beaten due to domestic issues. The accused, Giyasuddin Gazi, has been arrested, and there is no communal angle to the incident.”

To sum up, a video of an injured woman in West Bengal is falsely shared as that a Hindu woman attacked in Bangladesh.
