Following the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, in the first week of April, Muslims have been protesting against the newly enacted law across the country, including in West Bengal (here, here, and here). According to news reports (here, here), on 11 April 2025, these protests turned violent in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, resulting in Violence and riots. Reports (here, here, and here) indicate that three people lost their lives in the violence: two Hindus, Chandan Das and Hargobind Das, were killed in a mob attack, while a Muslim man died in police firing. According to reports, hundreds of people (mostly Hindus) affected by the violence in Murshidabad district crossed the Bhagirathi River. They sought refuge in the adjoining Malda district (here, here, and here). On 12 April 2025, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces to restore peace and order in the district (here).
Amidst this, a video is going viral on social media (here, here, and here) that claims to show a TMC leader threatening a woman DIG in West Bengal. Let’s verify the claim made in the post through this article.
Claim: The video shows a TMC leader threatening a woman DIG in West Bengal.
Fact: The video shows Congress Unakoti district president Badruj Jaman arguing with Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R in Kailashahar, Tripura, not a TMC leader in West Bengal. This incident occurred on 12 April 2025 during a violent protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, where clashes broke out between the police and protesters. Additionally, the West Bengal government’s cybercrime wing clarified that the viral claim is fake. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.
A reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral video led us to multiple media reports (here, here) published by Odisha-based outlets on 12 April 2025, featuring the same video. According to these reports, the exchange of words took place between the Superintendent of Police and the District Congress President following an incident in Kailashahar, located in the Unakoti district of Tripura.
To get more information, we did a Google keyword search using relevant keywords and found multiple reports (here, here, and here) covering the same incident. According to these reports, tensions erupted in Kailashahar, Unakoti district, after a protest turned violent on 12 April 2025. The demonstration, which began peacefully in Tillabazar, was held to demand the immediate withdrawal of the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act. However, at Kubjhar village, the protest escalated when some demonstrators reportedly started marching towards Kailashahar town without official permission. Police had set up barricades to stop them, leading to clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Protesters allegedly hurled bricks at the police, injuring some officers. Tripura Police reportedly detained eight individuals in connection with the incident.
Unakoti district superintendent of police Sudhambika R and DIG (Northern Range) Rati Ranjan Debnath later rushed to the spot to assess the situation. Congress Unakoti district president Badruj Jaman, who led the protest, blamed the police for provoking the violence. He was also seen arguing with SP Sudhambika—an exchange captured in the viral video.
Additionally, the West Bengal government’s cybercrime wing clarified that the viral claim is fake. The incident took place in Tripura, where a protest by Muslim community members against the Waqf (Amendment) Act turned tense. It has no link to West Bengal. (here, here)
To sum up, a video of a Congress leader in Tripura arguing with the police is falsely shared as that of a TMC leader from West Bengal.
