A video from 2023 is falsely shared as visuals of a recent incident in Indore where Muslim men were paraded semi-naked for pelting stones at Hindu houses on Eid.

A video of a few half-naked men whose hands are seen tied with ropes, being paraded by the police on streets is doing the rounds on social media. It is being claimed that the police made them do this because the group of men, allegedly Muslims, threw stones at Hindu houses in Indore on this year’s Eid( Bakrid), which was celebrated on 16 June 2024 (Madhya Pradesh’s CM Mohan Yadav’s name was mentioned in the post’s description). We fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: The viral video shows a recent 2024 incident from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore where a few Muslim men’s hands were tied with ropes and paraded semi-naked by the police for throwing stones at Hindus on Bakrid.

Fact:  This incident reportedly happened in September 2023, when Shivraj Singh Chouhan was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, not Mohan Yadav. Also, this incident has no communal angle to it. Police made these men parade semi-naked on the streets for throwing stones at each other. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.

To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a keyword search on the internet using relevant keywords, which led us to multiple news reports (here and here) related to the video from September 2023.

Times of India reported in September 2023 that  “The Madhya Pradesh police have arrested eight men and paraded them half-naked on the street of Indore. The men were accused of stone-pelting and created ruckus. Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media. The men were seen chanting-‘Paatharbazi nahi karenge, nahi karenge’. Netizens have reacted to the video.”

This incident reportedly happened in the Sadar Bazaar police station area of Indore. Talking to the media about this incident, the Indore police clarified (here and here) in September 2023 that the incident happened between two miscreant groups.

An altercation took place between the two groups in an old dispute, during which stones were hurled at each other. This led to their arrest, after which the police officers took them back to the same place where they hurled stones at each other, paraded them semi-naked, and made them apologise to the public for their bad behaviour. The police identified the accused as Zubair, Mohammad Amjad, Moin Qureshi, Wasim, Mohsin Qureshi, Masroof, Imran (and Shahrukh, as per ETV Bharat).

Additionally, when this incident happened in September 2023, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh was Shivraj Singh Chouhan, not Mohan Yadav. Mohan Yadav assumed (here and here)the Chief minister’s office in December 2023.

To sum up, this video of semi-naked men being paraded on a street by the police was filmed in September 2023, not recently.
