A 2020 video of a landslide sweeping away houses into the sea in Norway is shared as Jammu, India

In August 2025, record monsoon rains triggered floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir, killing at least 34–41 people, including Vaishno Devi pilgrims. Schools were shut, train services suspended, bridges collapsed, and highways blocked, crippling communication and infrastructure. Authorities launched large-scale evacuations and relief operations as rising rivers displaced thousands, exposing the region’s growing vulnerability to natural disasters (here, here, here).

Amidst this, a video is circulating on social media (here, here, and here) that claims to show a landslide sweeping homes into a water body in Jammu, India, following heavy rains. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Claim: The video shows a landslide in Jammu sweeping houses into a water body following heavy rains.

Fact: The viral video does not show a landslide in Jammu, India. It was actually filmed in Alta city, Norway, where on 03 June 2020, a massive landslide in the Kråkneset area submerged eight houses in the Norwegian Sea. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to several media reports (here, here, and here) from 05 June 2020, which feature the extended version of the same video. According to these reports, the video is from Norway.

According to reports (here, here, and here), the incident took place on 03 June 2020 in Alta city, Norway. In the Kråkneset area, a massive landslide submerged eight houses in the Norwegian Sea. According to reports citing the police, no one was harmed in the accident. A dog swept away by the water was also rescued, and nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution. The landslide was captured on video by resident Jan Egil Bakkedal, who said he ran for his life when he realised what was happening; one of the houses lost in the landslide belonged to him. Police reported that the landslide in Kråkneset measured between 650 and 800 metres wide and up to 40 metres high.
