2023 Chennai airport flood video misattributed to August 2025 Jammu & Kashmir floods

Jammu and Kashmir has been experiencing severe flooding since August 2025, following record monsoon rains that triggered flash floods and landslides in Jammu. This has resulted in casualties, extensive infrastructure damage, disruption of transportation and communication, mass evacuations, and ongoing rescue operations (see here, here, here, and here). Amidst this, a video (here, here, and here) is going viral on social media, claiming to show visuals of flooding at Jammu Airport. Through this article, let us fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video shows flooding at Jammu Airport caused by heavy rains in August 2025.

Fact: This viral video has no connection to Jammu and Kashmir. It dates back to 2023 and shows flooding at Chennai Airport caused by Cyclone Michaung in December 2023. While heavy rains have caused catastrophic flooding in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, there are no reports of Jammu Airport being flooded in August 2025. However, Jammu Airport did face disruptions due to the heavy rainfall and was closed from the afternoon of 26 August 2025 until the afternoon of 27 August 2025. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

A reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral video led to earlier uploads dated 04 December 2023. Several news outlets (herehere, and here) reported that the video was from Chennai Airport, where Cyclone Michaung caused flooding and led to a temporary suspension of operations.

Furthermore, the Aircraft Stand Identification Sign visible in the viral video features coordinates that are traceable to Chennai Airport.

To sum it up, a 2023 video of flooding at Chennai Airport has been misattributed to the August 2025 Jammu and Kashmir floods.
